Maintenance & Care Guide
Service schedule, cleaning and detailing method, corrosion control, longevity practices, pre-ride checklist, tools and parts — for the Indian-market XSR155 with E20 engine, dual-channel ABS, traction control and USD fork.
This guide is written for the India Yamaha Motor (IYM) XSR155 launched in November 2025: E20-compatible 155 cc VVA engine, dual-channel ABS, traction control (TCS), assist-and-slipper clutch, USD front fork, aluminium swingarm, 100/80-17 front and 140/70R-17 radial rear tyres, Y-Connect cluster. Specifications come from IYM's official brochure and service programme, and from Yamaha's owner's manuals for the same 155 VVA platform (the India-market MT-15 and the XSR155 sold in Thailand), which carry identical engine, chain, torque and tyre-pressure values. Anything that could not be confirmed for the Indian bike specifically is marked as such.

Battery warning: VRLA batteries need a constant-voltage smart charger. A conventional/old-style trickle charger will damage it.
Oil warning: No chemical additives β the oil also lubricates the wet clutch. Do not use oils labelled "ENERGY CONSERVING II" or higher, or diesel "CD" grade. Additive-heavy or friction-modified oils cause clutch slip.

These are the values Yamaha's manuals give for the 155 platform in India (same figure solo or two-up). They are also printed on the tyre-pressure label fixed to the bike. The label on your bike is the final word: if it shows a two-tier table (up to 90 kg load / above 90 kg), follow that. "Cold" means the bike has sat for 3+ hours or been ridden under 2 km.
Maximum load (rider + pillion + luggage + accessories): 172 kg (155 platform figure β confirm on the label).
Stock tyres: 100/80-17 M/C 52P front, 140/70R-17 M/C 66H rear β both tubeless, rear is a radial. Replace with the same size and construction; ABS and TCS compare front and rear wheel speeds, and a different profile upsets that. Ground clearance is only 120 mm β the lowest in Yamaha's 155 range β so speed breakers are taken slowly and straight, especially two-up.

Break-in (only relevant if the bike is new or freshly rebuilt)
- 0β1,000 km: avoid sustained running above 5,000 rpm. Oil and filter must be changed at 1,000 km.
- 1,000β1,600 km: avoid sustained running above 7,500 rpm.
- 1,600 km onwards: normal use. Redline is 11,000 rpm β stay out of it.
ABS, traction control and the connected cluster
- ABS warning light comes on at key-on and goes out once the bike moves off (a few km/h). If it stays on or comes on while riding, ABS is disabled β the brakes still work conventionally. Dealer diagnostic.
- TCS indicator lights at key-on and goes out; it flashes when the system is actually intervening. Flashing continuously with no wheel slip, or staying lit, means a fault.
- TCS can be switched off from the handlebar for a wet or gravel start; it defaults back to on at the next key cycle. Leave it on for road use.
- Both systems read wheel-speed sensor rings on each wheel. Keep them free of packed mud and grit, never aim a pressure jet at them, and never fit a tyre size or profile other than stock.
- Never run the engine with the rear wheel spinning on a stand for more than a few seconds β the ABS/TCS unit reads a large front/rear speed mismatch. Rotate the wheel by hand for chain work.
- The Y-Connect cluster draws a small standby current. On a bike that sits for two weeks or more, that is enough to flatten a 4 Ah battery β use a maintenance charger.
2. Maintenance schedule
Two schedules apply to an Indian XSR155, and both matter.
1. The owner's manual chart (what gets done, and when Yamaha says it is due). It runs on a 1,000 / 4,000 / 8,000 / 12,000 / 16,000 km cycle. From 20,000 km the cycle repeats starting at the 4,000 km column β so 20,000 = the 4,000 service, 24,000 = the 8,000 service, and so on. Whichever comes first, km or months; there is an annual check if the km are not reached.
2. The Yamaha India dealer programme (what keeps the warranty valid). Free services fall due at 1,000 / 4,000 / 7,000 / 10,000 km (a fifth at 13,000 km on some models), each with a day limit from the date of purchase β 30 / 150 / 270 / 390 (/ 510) days. After the free services, each paid service is due every 3,000 km or 120 days from the previous one, whichever comes first. The exact count and dates for this bike are in the service & warranty booklet supplied with it.
The standard warranty is 2 years; the optional Protection Plus extends cover on engine, FI, AIS and electricals up to 8 years β and both are conditional on every service being done at the correct km/days at an authorised dealer, with the invoices kept. A lapsed service voids the extended cover.
How to reconcile the two: book the bike on the dealer cadence (every 3,000 km / 120 days after the free services β it is the stricter of the two and the one the warranty is checked against), and use the manual chart below to know which replacement items are due at each visit. In practice this means an oil change at every service; the 8,000 km plug and filter and the 12,000 km air filter fall on the nearest dealer visit.
Every ride

Every 1,000 km β and after every wash, every ride in rain, every ride through wet roads
- Clean, inspect and lubricate the drive chain. Check slack and alignment.
This is the single highest-value maintenance habit on this bike. A neglected 428 chain will destroy both sprockets and cost you far more than the lube ever would.

Every 8,000 km

Valve clearance β interval to confirm against the printed manual
The manual marks a valve clearance check twice within the 16,000 km cycle. Whether those two checks fall at 8,000/16,000 or 12,000/24,000 could not be confirmed from the digital copy. Treat it as a check due somewhere in the 8,000β12,000 km window and have it done at a dealer. Confirm the exact column against the printed chart in the owner's manual (page 7-2). This is a dealer job either way β it needs shims, feeler gauges, cam timing knowledge and a cold engine.
The evaporative emission control system check is marked the same way β twice per cycle, column unconfirmed. It is a dealer inspection item; ask for it at the same service as the valve check.
Symptoms of overdue valves: harder cold starts, ticking that doesn't go away when warm, worse fuel economy, weaker top end.

Who does what
You can do: oil and filter change, chain clean/lube/adjust, air filter check hose, spark plug, battery terminals, all lubrication points, tyre pressure, pad wear inspection, fluid level checks, bulbs and fuses.
Dealer should do: valve clearance, coolant change, brake fluid change and bleed (the ABS hydraulic unit has its own bleed procedure β not a home job on this bike), fork oil, swingarm/steering bearing greasing, air filter service (Yamaha specifies dealer for this, though it's a straightforward job), diagnostic scans including ABS/TCS fault codes, throttle body/idle adjustment if the screw method doesn't work.
3. Drive chain β the highest-return maintenance job
Checking slack
- Bike on the sidestand, transmission in neutral, no weight on it.
- Measure vertical movement at the midpoint of the lower run.
- Target 30β40 mm. Rotate the wheel and check at several points β chains wear unevenly.
If the tight spot and loose spot differ by more than about 10 mm, the chain is worn out. Replace chain and both sprockets as a set.
Too tight is worse than too loose. An over-tight chain loads the gearbox output bearing and can snap under suspension compression.
Adjusting
The manual advises consulting a Yamaha dealer before adjusting chain slack for the first time. The procedure itself:
- Loosen the axle nut and the locknut on each side of the swingarm.
- Turn the adjuster bolt on each side equally. Use the alignment marks on both sides of the swingarm β both pullers must read the same, or your rear wheel is out of line and the chain and tyre will wear diagonally.
- Torque the axle nut to 59 NΒ·m, then the locknuts to 16 NΒ·m.
- Re-check slack and that the chain runs smoothly.
Cleaning and lubricating
Yamaha's own procedure:
- Clean the chain with soapy water to lift dust and mud, then dry it off.
- Spray chain cleaner on all links and side plates, then wipe.
- Lubricate thoroughly with a special O-ring chain lubricant.
Never use steam cleaners, high-pressure washers, or petrol, thinners or other harsh solvents on the chain β they force water past the O-rings and wash out the factory grease inside, which can never be replaced.
Practical method:
- Warm chain lubes better than a cold one. Lube after a ride, not before.
- Apply lube to the inside run of the chain, aimed at the gap between the side plates, while slowly rotating the wheel. That's where the O-rings are. Lube on the outside of the plates just collects dirt.
- Let it set for 10β20 minutes before riding so it doesn't fling off.
- Wipe excess. A soaked chain throws lube onto your rear tyre and swingarm.
- Rear sprocket teeth going hooked or shark-finned = replace the set.
Chain-brush technique
A three-sided chain brush plus a grunge-catching tray costs little and turns a 20-minute job into a 5-minute one. Do it on the sidestand, rolling the bike in neutral, or use a paddock stand.
4. Washing β how to make it shine without wrecking it
Frequency
- After any ride in rain, on salted roads, or near the coast β non-negotiable, same day if possible. Salt is corrosive to metal.
- Normal city use: a proper wash every 2β3 weeks, a rinse and wipe-down more often.
- Don't over-wash. Weekly full washes with detergent strip wax, drive water into bearings and switchgear, and make you re-lube the chain every time. A quick detailer + microfibre wipe-down gets you 80% of the shine with none of the risk.

The full wash procedure
Before
- Park out of direct sunlight, let the bike cool completely.
- Check every cap, cover, electrical coupler and connector is properly seated.
- Bag the muffler outlet with a plastic bag and a rubber band.
- Pre-soak bird droppings and insects with a wet towel for a few minutes β never scrub them dry, they etch clearcoat and the grit scratches.
- Degrease road grime and oil stains with a proper degreaser and a plastic-bristle brush. Keep it off seals and axles.
Wash
- Rinse with a garden hose at low pressure. Avoid spraying directly into the muffler, instrument cluster, air intake, or under the seat.
- Wash with automotive shampoo (pH-neutral) in cool water using a soft microfibre wash mitt.
- If the bike has been near salt, use cold water. Warm water accelerates salt corrosion.
- Two-bucket method: one bucket of soapy water, one of clean rinse water for the mitt. This is what prevents swirl marks.
- Work top-down. Use a separate mitt or brush for wheels, chain area and underbody β never the same one you use on the tank.
- Old toothbrush or plastic-bristle detail brush for fin gaps, around fasteners, under the swingarm.
- Rinse thoroughly. Detergent residue left on plastic damages it.
After β this part is what actually creates the shine
- Dry with a chamois or, better, a microfibre terrycloth drying towel. Don't air-dry β that's how water spots form.
- Blow water out of crevices, bolt heads, and around the chain β a leaf blower or compressed air works well.
- Dry and re-lubricate the chain. Mandatory after every wash.
- Chrome polish on chrome, aluminium and stainless parts. The heat discolouration on stainless exhaust often polishes right out.
- Corrosion-protection spray on all metal parts, including chrome and nickel plating. This is the step almost everyone skips and it's the one that matters most long-term.
- Treat rubber, vinyl and unpainted plastic with a dedicated care product.
- Touch up stone chips in the paint β do this the day you notice them, not next month.
- Wax painted surfaces with a non-abrasive wax, or use a motorcycle detail spray. Apply sparingly, wipe off excess. Not on rubber, not on unpainted plastic, not on matte.
- Start the engine and idle it a few minutes to drive off remaining moisture.
- If the headlight lens fogs, run the engine with the headlight on to clear it.
- Let it dry completely before covering or storing.
Safety check before you ride
- Make sure there is no wax or lubricant on brakes or tyres.
- Wash tyres with warm water and mild detergent if anything got on them.
- Clean discs and pads with brake cleaner or acetone if contaminated.
- Brake pads get wet during a wash β test the brakes at low speed before riding normally, and test cornering behaviour before any speed.
Keeping it shining between washes
- Quick detailer spray + two clean microfibre towels: one to spray and spread, one to buff dry. 5 minutes, no water, no risk.
- Wax or a spray sealant every 4β8 weeks. A sealed surface makes the next wash easier and stops brake dust and road film bonding.
- A ceramic coating on the painted surfaces gives a year or two of easier cleaning per application β a reasonable one-off for a bike that is being kept long-term.
- Keep a microfibre in the garage and wipe the tank and headlight after every ride. That alone keeps a bike looking new.
- Never dry-wipe a dusty bike. Dust is abrasive. Spray something wet first, always.
5. Rust prevention and management
The XSR155's exposed retro styling means more bare metal, more fasteners in the weather, and more places rust can start.
Where it starts on this bike
- Chain and sprockets (the obvious one)
- Exhaust header, downpipe and clamps
- Fasteners: axle nuts, caliper bolts, engine casing bolts, mirror stems
- Fork stanchions just above the dust seals. On a USD fork the seals sit low, closer to road grit, and the gold anodised finish marks easily with harsh chemicals
- Under the fuel tank, behind the swingarm, on the underside of the frame β anywhere you never look. The aluminium swingarm does not rust; it develops white oxidation where the finish is chipped, and acidic wheel cleaners attack it
- Brake disc surfaces (surface rust after rain is normal and wipes off on first braking; pitting is not)
- Battery terminals
- Inside the fuel tank if it's stored low on fuel
Prevention β highest value first
- Wash off salt and rain water the same day. Salt and standing water are the whole problem.
- Corrosion-inhibitor spray after every wash. Use a proper anti-corrosion product (ACF-50, S100 Corrosion Protectant, Motul EZ Clean/protect, or WD-40 Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor) on fasteners, brackets, engine casings, exhaust clamps and under the bike. Keep it off brakes, tyres, discs, seat and grips.
- Quarterly β twice a year at the very least β do a deliberate anti-corrosion application: bike clean and bone dry, spray the whole underbody and every fastener, wipe surfaces you touch.
- Fix paint chips immediately. A chip on steel becomes a rust spot in a monsoon.
- Don't store the bike wet or under a tarp while damp. Yamaha calls out specifically: a covered wet bike traps humidity and rusts. Use a porous/breathable cover, not plastic sheeting.
- Avoid storing near damp cellars, stables (ammonia), or strong chemicals.
- Keep the tank full during long layoffs β an empty tank sweats internally and rusts.
- Dielectric grease on electrical connectors if you ride in heavy rain regularly.
- Anti-seize on the axle threads and caliper bolts at reassembly β prevents seized fasteners two years later.
Treating rust that's already there

Do not use acidic rust removers near paint or alloy, and never let rust remover touch a towel you'll use elsewhere on the bike.
6. Longevity β best practices, do and don't
Maintenance schedules keep a bike legal and safe. What actually decides whether this engine is healthy at 80,000 km is how you ride it and how consistently you do the small things. This section is the "why it lasts" part.
6.1 The five things that matter most
Ranked by how much life they add per unit of effort:
- Oil changed on time, every time. 0.85 L is a small sump for a VVA single that revs to 11,000. Oil is the cooling and cleaning system as much as the lubricant. A skipped interval costs you cam lobe, piston ring and clutch life you can't get back.
- Chain maintained every 1,000 km. A dry chain wears sprockets, loads the gearbox output shaft, snatches the drivetrain and eventually breaks. It's a 5-minute job that protects a very expensive assembly.
- Never accelerate hard on a cold engine. Cold clearances, thick oil, unheated cylinder wall. More engine wear happens in the first two minutes of a cold ride than in the next two hours.
- Correct tyre pressure, checked weekly. Under-inflation kills tyres, wheel bearings and fuel economy, and changes how the bike handles in ways you'll blame on the suspension.
- Rinse off salt and rain the same day. Corrosion is the thing that makes a mechanically fine 8-year-old bike look and feel like scrap.
6.2 Riding technique that adds years
Warm-up. Start it, let it idle 30β60 seconds until it settles, then ride gently for the first 3β5 km. Don't sit idling in the driveway for five minutes β that's worse than riding gently, because it builds heat without airflow and washes fuel past the rings. Ride it warm, don't idle it warm.
Use the rev range, but use it correctly. This engine is designed to rev. The VVA switches to the high-speed cam around 7,400 rpm. Riding it 3,000β8,000 rpm is entirely healthy once warm. What hurts:
- Lugging β full throttle at 2,500 rpm in a tall gear. High cylinder pressure, low oil flow, low airflow. This is damaging and very common in traffic. Downshift instead.
- Sitting on the rev limiter. Redline is 11,000. Bouncing off it repeatedly stresses valve train and rings for no gain β power is already falling off.
- Sustained full throttle with no cooling airflow, e.g. long steep climbs in low gear at low speed.
Smooth inputs. Abrupt throttle on/off transmits shock loads through the chain, sprockets, cush drive and gearbox. Rolling the throttle rather than snapping it is measurably easier on the drivetrain.
Clutch discipline. It's a wet clutch sharing engine oil. Don't ride with your fingers resting on the lever (partial disengagement = constant slip = heat in your oil). Don't slip the clutch to hold the bike on a hill β use the rear brake. Full lever pull for every shift you make with the clutch, released smoothly.
Downshifting. Blip the throttle to match revs on downshifts. Dumping the clutch at mismatched revs shock-loads the gearbox and the rear tyre. The slipper clutch helps but isn't a licence to be careless.
Braking. Use both brakes. Front-only means the rear pads glaze and the rear disc rusts; rear-only overheats a single small disc. Never rest your foot on the rear brake pedal in traffic β dragging pads cook fluid, glaze pads and warp discs, and you won't notice until the pedal goes long.
Roads. With 120 mm of ground clearance this bike scrapes where an MT-15 would not. Slow for potholes, speed breakers and rail crossings, cross breakers straight and upright, and do not take a big hump two-up at speed β the exhaust and catalytic converter are the low points. Fork seals, wheel bearings, spokes-equivalent rim integrity and swingarm bearings all die from impacts, not from mileage. Standing on the pegs over rough sections takes load off the seat, subframe and your spine.
Deep water. Yamaha's warning is explicit: don't ride through it. The air intake and the fact that a hydrolocked engine is a rebuilt engine make this non-negotiable. Puddles are deeper than they look.
6.3 Heat management
Small liquid-cooled singles live or die on cooling. In stop-go traffic in hot weather this bike works hard.
- Watch the coolant temperature warning light. If it comes on, stop and shut off β don't try to ride to a shop.
- Keep the radiator fins clean and unblocked. Rinse mud and insects out gently from the back forwards, low pressure β bent fins reduce cooling. Straighten bent fins with a fin comb, carefully.
- Don't fit anything that blocks airflow to the radiator: crash bars with plates, oversized number plates, cosmetic mesh that clogs.
- Change coolant on the 3-year schedule even if it looks fine. Corrosion inhibitors deplete long before the colour changes, and a corroded water pump or radiator core is expensive.
- Never top up with hard water or salt water. Distilled or soft tap water only in an emergency, and swap to proper coolant as soon as you can.
- In long traffic jams, switch off rather than idle where it's safe to do so.
6.4 Fuel system
The most commonly reported problems on this platform are in the fuel system β pump and injector faults, usually traced to bad fuel or long periods sitting.
- Buy from high-turnover stations. Stale fuel and water-contaminated tanks cause most injector issues.
- Regular unleaded (91 RON) is the specified fuel. Higher octane isn't a performance upgrade on this engine, but consistent quality is.
- Don't habitually run the tank near empty. The pump is fuel-cooled and fuel-lubricated; running low repeatedly shortens its life, and it draws sediment from the bottom of the tank.
- Keep the tank full during layoffs β full tank = less internal condensation = less rust and water in the fuel.
- Fuel stabiliser after every fill-up if the bike routinely sits for weeks.
- This engine is E20 compatible, and E20 is what Indian pumps sell. Ethanol is hygroscopic β it pulls water out of the air β so fuel hygiene matters more than it did on E10: keep the tank full when the bike sits, do not leave a half tank for months, and expect fuel economy a little below the E10 figures. Methanol blends remain off-limits.
6.5 Electrical and battery
- Short trips are what kill motorcycle batteries. A 10-minute ride uses more charge starting than the alternator replaces. If most of your riding is short hops, put the bike on a smart charger weekly.
- 12 V 3.0 Ah is a small battery. Accessories (aux lights, USB chargers, heated gear) add up fast β check the load before adding anything.
- Clean and tighten battery terminals every few months; a smear of dielectric grease after.
- A battery that cranks slowly is telling you it's near the end. Replace it before it strands you β a dying battery also stresses the starter and the regulator/rectifier.
- Keep connectors dry. Never point a hose at the fuse box, the ECU area under the seat, or the switchgear.
6.6 Drivetrain longevity
- Correct slack (30β40 mm) is more important than lube frequency for sprocket life. Too tight is the more damaging error.
- Check wheel alignment using the swingarm marks every time you adjust. A misaligned rear wheel eats a chain, a sprocket set and a rear tyre simultaneously.
- Replace chain and both sprockets as a set. Always.
- If you're a high-km rider, a quality aftermarket O-ring 428 chain and steel sprockets will outlast cheaper options by a wide margin. Skip aluminium rear sprockets β they look good and wear fast.
- Lube after riding while the chain is warm, not before riding.
6.7 Suspension, bearings and chassis
- Front fork and rear shock get checked at every service for a reason. The USD fork carries its seals at the bottom of the legs, right in the spray from the front wheel; wipe the exposed stanchion after every wet ride and check the dust seals monthly. Any oil film on a stanchion means the seal is going β fix it before the oil gets on the front brake. A seal-cleaning tool slipped under the dust lip clears the grit that starts most leaks.
- Grease the swingarm pivots and steering head bearings at 24,000 km. Almost everyone skips this and then wonders why the steering feels notchy at 40,000 km. It's cheap when done on schedule and expensive when the bearing races are pitted.
- Notchy steering (the bars want to centre themselves) means the steering head bearings have brinelled. Replace, don't just re-grease.
- Retorque chassis fasteners at every service. Vibration loosens things on a single-cylinder bike faster than you'd expect. Axle nuts, caliper bolts, footpeg brackets, bar clamps, exhaust mounts.
- Don't hang heavy accessories off the handlebars or front fork β Yamaha warns about this specifically for handling, and it also fatigues mounts.
6.8 Brake longevity
- Clean and lubricate the caliper slider pins when you change pads. Sticking pins are the number one cause of pads wearing unevenly and discs warping.
- Push the caliper pistons back and clean the exposed piston surface with brake cleaner every few months, especially in monsoon. Corroded pistons drag, then seize.
- Bed new pads in properly: a series of moderate stops from moderate speed, no hard stops, no sitting on the brake at a standstill while hot.
- Change fluid every 2 years even if it looks clean. DOT 4 absorbs water from the air; the water boils long before the fluid does, and that's what a spongy lever in the hills means.
6.9 The maintenance rhythm
Consistency beats intensity. A realistic cadence:

6.11 The mistakes that shorten life most
In rough order of damage done:
- Stretching oil intervals because the bike "feels fine".
- Hard acceleration before the engine is warm.
- Neglected or over-tightened chain.
- Riding through standing water.
- Never washing off salt/rain, then storing it damp under a plastic cover.
- Letting the bike sit unused for months with a part-full tank and no battery tender.
- Running low-quality or stale fuel habitually.
- Cheap counterfeit oil, filters and brake fluid. This is a real and common problem β buy from established sellers.
- Ignoring a warning light or a new noise for "a few more weeks".
- High-pressure washing.
Do
- Change oil on schedule even if you ride little. Oil degrades with time and heat cycles, not just km. This engine has a small 0.85 L sump β contamination concentrates fast.
- Warm the engine gently. Never accelerate hard on a cold engine β Yamaha states this outright.
- Ride the bike regularly. Bikes that sit develop fuel system problems, flat-spotted tyres and dead batteries far faster than bikes that get used.
- Use regular unleaded from busy stations with fresh stock. Fuel pump and injector problems on this platform are usually traced to bad fuel or long idle periods, and E20 makes stale fuel worse, not better.
- Keep a maintenance log (template at the end).
- Use genuine or reputable OEM-equivalent parts β filters, plugs and brake pads especially.
- Keep the VIN and engine number recorded somewhere off the bike.
- Replace both sprockets when you replace the chain, and vice versa. Mixing new and worn wears the new part out fast.
- Learn the sound of your bike. Most failures announce themselves first.
- Check tyre pressure weekly β it's the cheapest performance and safety gain available.
Don't
- Don't ride through deep water. Yamaha warns this can damage the engine. Avoid puddles β they're deeper than they look.
- Don't idle for long periods. It builds heat, fouls the plug, dilutes oil and does nothing good.
- Don't rev the engine into the red zone (11,000 rpm+).
- Don't coast in neutral with the engine off for long, and don't tow the bike far β the gearbox is only lubricated with the engine running.
- Don't force shifts without the clutch. Clutchless upshifts with a properly unloaded throttle are common practice, but the manual's position is unambiguous: always use the clutch. Know where the manual stands, whatever your habit.
- Don't mix oil additives β it's a wet clutch.
- Don't fit a fuse with a higher amperage than specified. Fire risk.
- Don't stick tinted film or stickers on the headlight lens.
- Don't mix tyre brands or models front and rear.
- Don't remove the battery cell seals β permanently destroys a VRLA battery.
- Don't remove the radiator cap when hot. Only ever top up via the reservoir.
- Don't ignore a warning light that stays on.
Storage
Short (up to ~1 month)
- Park cool, dry, out of direct sun. Breathable cover only, and only when fully dry.
- Fill the tank and use a fuel stabiliser if the bike sits between rides regularly.
- Battery tender if it'll sit past a couple of weeks.
Long (60 days or more) β Yamaha's own procedure:
- Do all outstanding maintenance and repairs first.
- Complete the full clean-and-protect routine in Section 4.
- Fill the tank, add fuel stabiliser, run the engine 5 minutes to circulate treated fuel.
- Fog the cylinder: remove the plug, pour a teaspoon of engine oil into the bore, ground the plug electrodes against the head with the cap on, turn the engine over a few times to coat the bore, then refit. (Grounding the plug is a safety step β do not skip it.)
- Lubricate all cables, pivots, levers, pedals and the sidestand.
- Correct tyre pressures, then lift the bike so both wheels are off the ground. If you can't, rotate the wheels a little once a month so the tyres don't flat-spot.
- Bag the muffler outlet.
- Remove the battery and fully charge it, or leave a compatible maintenance charger connected. Store the battery between 0β30 Β°C and recharge monthly. Constant-voltage charger only.

Insulator colour as a diagnostic: medium-to-light tan is correct. Anything distinctly different (white, black, oily, wet) means the engine is running wrong. Don't self-diagnose from this β get it checked.
8. Warning signs β stop riding and get it checked
- Coolant temperature warning light comes on β stop the engine immediately and let it cool. Never continue riding an overheating engine. Never open the radiator cap hot.
- Engine trouble warning light stays on β don't ride it, dealer diagnostic.
- ABS warning light stays on after moving off, or comes on while riding β ABS is disabled; brakes work conventionally. Ride gently to a dealer.
- TCS indicator flashing with no wheel slip, or staying lit β system fault, dealer diagnostic.
- Brake lever feels soft or spongy β air in the hydraulic system. Get it bled before riding.
- Brake fluid level drops suddenly β check pads and check for leaks before riding.
- Any free play at the brake lever end β system inspection.
- Sidestand won't move smoothly or won't stay up β fix before riding.
- Fork doesn't compress and rebound smoothly, or shows oil.
- Free play felt when rocking the fork legs fore-aft with the front wheel raised β steering bearings.
- Play in a wheel hub, or a wheel that won't spin smoothly β wheel bearings.
- Any crack, bend or warp in a wheel rim β replace the wheel. Do not attempt any repair, however small.
- Fuel level segments flashing repeatedly β sensor circuit fault.
9. Pre-ride checklist

- Model-specific facts for the Indian XSR155 (E20 compatibility, tyre sizes, 4.0 Ah battery, ABS, TCS, USD fork, aluminium swingarm, 120 mm ground clearance, warranty terms) are from India Yamaha Motor's official brochure, press releases and service-programme pages.
- The Indian dealer service cadence (free services at 1,000 / 4,000 / 7,000 / 10,000 (/13,000) km; paid services every 3,000 km or 120 days) is from Yamaha India's published Recommended Service Schedule. The service & warranty booklet supplied with the bike overrides this document.
